Anti-Racism - How to Eradicate Racial Biases in Your Kid?
As
a society, we should try to erase racism and spread love and equality among
human beings. As a parent, we can bring that change in our society by raising
our kids the right way. Most people think that educating your child on such
topics isn't necessary. Unfortunately, they forget that those kids are the new
generation of this world. Parents can adopt a practice of discussing sensitive
matters with their kids. It will help the little ones view the world the right
way because there will be many people in the society who will try to bring out
the worst in them. If your child already knows about such sensitive topics,
then no matter how much another person tries to drill the negativity down their
brain, they will know what is right and which path they should follow.
When it comes to racism, make sure your child follows the rule "treat others the same way they want to be treated," Recently, it has been seen that just following this rule won't make kids anti-racist. Though it seems hard to eradicate racism from this society but every individual should at least try to do it.
So as a parent, what can you do to make your child anti-racist? We have penned down a few ways you can try to eliminate racial biases in your children.
The first change should be in you
Before you start the ignition of ending racism in your kid, try to change yourself first. You have to look for any racist behavior in yourself. If you see yourself following society's rule on racism unconsciously, then it's time to change yourself first. You know a child follows in their parent's footsteps. Other than that, educate yourself on this topic. It's okay if you don't have much knowledge regarding it; try to read more articles and books or listen to podcasts. It will help you become a better role model for your children. With that, you might also have to diversify your social gatherings. If you have your friends circle from the same race and color, then it will be hard for your child to convince that people of every color can be befriended. Try to bring in diversity.
Conversations with your child
As a parent, you should have open conversations with your children. As they get, older those conversations will deepen and become mature.
Try to talk to your kid in simple terms so that they can understand. Once they understand, they won't have any confusions left, and society won’t be able to influence them. Shape your child's mind yourself, and don't let society change your child into something they aren't. Remember, it's crucial to talk to your kid about these issues but don't throw so much onto them altogether. If you give a large dose, then they may faint and fall. They won't be able to digest this much information all in one go. Give them the information in bits and pieces.
Show them diversity let them experience it
We all know "actions speak louder than words." So, don't just tell your kid that they should have a diverse circle of friends but also do it yourself and set an example. Ask them to accompany you in different cultural festivals. You can even get them enrolled in a diverse summer camping program.
Use movies and books
We all know the role media plays in shaping a child’s mindset, So it can be helpful regarding racism. You can tell them whenever a scene in a movie contains diversity so that it will help them with their critical thinking. You can also talk about influential people from different races, cultures, and with different colors. You can tell them about their achievements and also reflect on their characteristics.
It's a challenge to reduce racism, but there is still a chance for the kids to become the new and better face of this society. Parents are a great helping hand in such situations because their rules and upbringing will make their child a better person.
Follow these tips to bring out the best in them and to eliminate racism.
